The Euripus Bridge

Chalkida is a unique resort for the residents of Athens, as these two cities are very close to each other. Halkida is considered one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. The old bridge is the trademark of the city. The visitor there can enjoy the view of the city from a distant place. The visitor can enjoy from the multiple restaurants and cafeterias the view of the port, the old bridge and the unique phenomenon that takes place at the straits of Euripus. The phenomenon is known as tide. Tides are the rise and fall or water levels. The strait of Euripus is subject to strong tidal currents which reverse direction approximately four times a day lasting for about six hours each.

Moving a little further someone can enjoy the Karampampa castle, a medieval fortress, built by the Venetian Gerolimo Galopo, the period of the Ottoman domination of the area. Halkidas’s castle is the venue of a lot of cultural demonstrations, which are really worth for someone to visit. From the one hand there is the tradition and from the other is a modern urban center. The “tall bridge” of Halkida, is a project that got completed in 1993, and converted the city to the modern urban center it is today, and it is considered as an achievement of modern mechanics. Built over 700m over the sea, it depends on 144 wire ropes, which start from the pillars of the bridge and hold all the weight. The bridge grants easy and safe access for anyone who want to visit the city by car.

  • The New Bridge of Chalkida is considered as an impressive achievement of modern mechanics. Despite the weight it holds, the road is no more thicker than 43 cm.
  • The Old Bridge of Chalkida. It was built on 1962 and is the mark of the city. It only has two lanes but it is located at an ideal spot for someone to observe the tide.
  • The Karampampa Castle, a medieval type fortress, built on the Ottoman Empire. A lot of cultural happenings are taking place to this castle, that are really worth for someone to attend to.
  • The Red House. Built for a popular family of the island on the north side of the city beach. It was built on 1884 by the French architect Flegis and is now property of the Municipality of Chalkida.
  • Saint Paraskeui Church. A byzantine temple that was rebuilt form the Venetians on the 14th century A.D.

Beaches

In Evoia there are 127 beaches and tourist places with hotels, rooms to rent and places for food, coffee and entertainment. The beaches you can find on the South and central part of the island are the following: Stira, Marmari, Karistos, Alampeika. Someone must also visit the north side beaches(1-2 hour drive) such as Rovies, Agia Anna, Aidipsos, Palaio Dafnopotamo beach, Kimasi etc.

Local Food and Products

The local products of Evoia are the following: Honey, spoon deserts, wine, fish and dairy products. If you find yourself at Evoia, you should visit one of the many restaurants of the island and try traditional dishes such as Kapama Lamb, Karistos Beef, Saganaki of shrimps, rooster on wine, saussages etc. As for the desert you should ask for almond desserts, galaktompoureko, doughnuts and pasteli.
